Flaky Pizza Roll with Sweet & Spicy Italian Beef Sausage

Ingredients
Sweet and Spicy Sausage
1 lb. (454 g) lean ground beef
1 tsp (5 mL) salt
1 tsp (5 mL) garlic powder
1 tsp (5 mL) fennel seeds, toasted
¼ tsp (1 mL) chili flakes
½ tsp (2 mL) paprika
1 tsp (5 mL) oregano
½ tsp (2 mL) onion powder
½ tsp (2 mL) freshly ground pepper
1/8 tsp (0.5 mL) smoked paprika
¼ tsp (0.5 mL) coriander, ground
1 Tbsp (15 mL) maple syrup
¼ tsp (1 mL) cayenne, ground
Vegetable mixture
3 Tbsp (45 mL) onion, diced
¼ cup (50 mL) green pepper, chopped
2 Tbsp (30 mL) mushrooms, sliced
Pizza Rolls
2 Sheets (400 g) puff pastry, thawed
3 Tbsp (45 mL) pizza sauce
⅔ Cup (150 mL) mozzarella cheese, grated
Method
Sausage and Vegetables
In bowl of free standing mixer fitted with paddle attachment, add all sausage ingredients. Mix on medium low until fully combined.
In large frypan over medium high heat cook and brown sausage until cooked through. Removed sausage with slotted spoon to paper towel lined plate to drain excess fat. Set aside.
In same frypan saute onion, green pepper and mushrooms. Set aside.
Pizza Roll
Lay puff pastry out on a lightly floured surface.
Spoon half of the pizza sauce on bottom half of the pastry, leaving about ½” around the
edge as room to pinch closed at the end.
Layer half of all the toppings on top of the pizza sauce. Top with half of grated cheese.
Create slits in the top half of the pastry to act as vents.
Pull pastry closed and seal the edges with a fork.
Whisk one egg until no longer streaky to create an egg wash. Lightly brush top of pastry
with the egg wash.
Repeat with remaining ingredients.
Lightly salt top of pastry.
Place on a parchment lined sheet pan.
Bake at 375 F (190 °C) for 20 minutes or until pastry is cooked and filling is heated through.
