Agriculture is a complex system with many moving parts. Farmers are always looking to improve their productivity and find solutions to an ever-growing list of challenges, which are often environmental and human resource-driven. Science and technology have helped farmers solve a wide variety of problems, and have improved the quality of their lives. They can grow more with less, and adjust to climate change stressors like disease and pest pressure, thanks to advancements in plant breeding. Breeders like Kevin Baron are working to develop soybean varieties that are better suited to Manitoba’s climate and soil. Computer scientists, like Christopher Henry, are using artificial intelligence and machine learning to better predict which pea plants will have the highest rate of survival and production. Weather sensors, satellite technology, drones and other connected hardware are commonly being used to assist farmers and conduct research. At Innovation Farms powered by AgExpert, innovators from across industry and academia can test their solutions on a full commercial-scale farm, before bringing them to market.
