Whether farmers are growing crops or livestock, their success is often dictated by the quality of one small thing – seeds. Seeds are the foundation of all crops grown and consumed on the prairies. They are also an important source of feed for animals. Seeds may be small but they command a lot of care and attention within the agricultural sector.

Plant breeders and scientists are continually studying ways in which seeds can be improved to adapt to a changing environment. New varieties are bred to better withstand disease and pest pressures. These advancements in seed science benefit not only Canadian farmers and consumers, but varieties of seed developed here are shared with farmers around the globe.

At the University of Manitoba Dr. Curt McCartney and his team are developing more resilient varieties of Canadian Western Red Winter Wheat. Winter wheat, as the name implies, is planted in fall and harvested in late summer. It helps farmers space out their workload, and it provides many environmental benefits. Winter wheat helps reduce weed growth, prevents soil erosion, improves water retention and provides habitat for migrating waterfowl.
