To us, it may just look like “dirt”, but to a farmer, it is much more than that. Did you know that the soil is one of the most biodiverse ecosystems on Earth? Soil is alive with all kinds of microorganisms and insects. How that soil life is managed by farmers matters a great deal. Healthy soil can improve crop productivity, ensure environmental sustainability, protect water quality and reduce the impacts of climate change. Scientists like Dr. Stephen Crittenden and Dr. Matthew Bakker have dedicated their lives to studying the soil. They share those findings with farmers who use that data to influence beneficial management practices, like reducing tillage and implementing a healthy crop rotation including pulses and soybeans, to protect the health of their soils and the longevity of their farms.
