When travelling through rural Manitoba it is often hard to tell where nature ends and where farms begin. This is because many farm yards are surrounded by bluffs of trees and lush natural wetlands. Landon and Myka are turkey farmers from south eastern Manitoba. They farm along side Landon’s father, and live on the property Landon grew up on. It’s a property that is surrounded by thousands of tree. Most of which were planted by the family over their years on the farm. They maintain and plant trees not only because they provide privacy, but because they care for the environment and enjoy the watching the wildlife that frequent the property.
The life of a turkey farmer is not 9-5. Farmers are always “on call” in case something needs adjusting in the barn. It can be hard to get use to the fact that there is little separation between home life and work life, but Landon is thankful that his barns are just a short walk from his front door. It allows him to spend time with his family throughout the day. Myka describes farm life as a gift and enjoys being able to work closely with her husband on around the farm and garden.
