Farmers Ben & Clare

Many of the farmers we meet are exceedingly humble, private people. They don’t like to brag about their work. They just like to get it done. That was definitely the case for Ben and Clare. They are a family we had been trying to feature for many years, but something always got in the way. This year, we wouldn’t take no for an answer, and boy are we happy they obliged. We met them on their mixed farm in the foothills of the Turtle Mountains where they raise cattle and grow crops. Their respect for the land, and for each other was immediately evident. Their top priority is maintaining good soil, air and water quality, while growing high value crops, like peas and edible beans. Clare and her partner Simon were drawn back to the farm after University because they love the outdoors and the variety that life on the farm has to offer. Clare has been inspired by her dad’s careful decision making and collaborative nature. She hopes they can continue to farm in good relationship with the land while also learning about the impacts of colonization on the prairies, and the role that farmers can play in reconciliation.
