Backbone of the Community

Farmers Glen & Pam

Glen and Pam operate a beef farm near Darlingford. They are dedicated to raising their cattle using sustainable practices because they plan to preserve their “diamond in the rough” – the land that has been in their family for over 100 years. Their commitment is illustrated by the fact that they are participating in an Agriculture & Agri-Food Canada long term research project that compares the carbon sequestration of their grassland pastures to the methane emissions of the cattle. Early data from this study shows that there are positive environmental impacts from grazing cattle. This is reassuring for Glen and Pam who take immense pride in their farm and their community.  Pam volunteers at the local museum. Glen is a volunteer firefighter, and they both help organize the annual Darlingford Fall Supper. There are few prairie traditions held more dear than a fall supper, and Darlingford does it up right. The village of approximately 150 people, rallies together to serve an elaborate meal to approximately 400 people from the surrounding area. It’s a true testament to the fact that community must be measured by much more than numbers. When you have a group of passionate people with a respect for history and dreams for the future – big things can happen.
