Manitoba winters can be harsh but when you own livestock you’re forced to face the cold for the sake of your animals. There are no days off. Cows need to be fed, water troughs need to be thawed and calves need to be sheltered. At Anderson Cattle Co near Swan River, Austen and Katie Anderson raise purebred Angus beef cows.  Beef genetics, produced in Manitoba, are shared with farmers throughout North America and across the globe. The skill of selecting and matching the right genetics to improving the quality of the cow herd is something that breeders, like Austen, take great pride in. Raising cattle in Manitoba’s parkland isn’t for the faint of heart.  Farmers like Austen sacrifice their own comfort and put their livestock’s needs first, 365 days of the year. It’s more than a job. In order to do this work, farmers must have a true connection to the land and a commitment to caring for animals.
