Community is not always defined by geographic location. Sometimes the most supportive community can be one made up of likeminded people.

Turkeys are raised year-round in Manitoba with an average farm producing 7,000 turkeys, three times a year. That means farmers spend their days surrounded by a lot of turkeys but not a lot of other people! That’s why industry organizations, like the Manitoba Turkey Producers, are important.  An industry association is a community of farmers producing the same product who cooperatively share knowledge, efficiently navigate challenges, and work towards common goals. These organizations are led by boards of directors made up of the farmers they represent. In the case of the Manitoba Turkey Producers, that’s the 45 family farmers in Manitoba who raise turkey.

Each year farmers from Manitoba gather at the national Turkey Farmers of Canada meetings to collaborate with their national counterparts. These events are critical opportunities to built relationships, network with others who have shared experiences, set animal care and food safety standards, and to liaise with counterparts from across the value chain.
