In 2017 there was a gap of approximately 63,000 workers in Canada’s ag sector. It’s projected that this will grow to be a gap of 123,000 workers by 2029. There are endless opportunities for employment in the agriculture sector and a skilled labour shortage. The swine sector alone is responsible for 22,000 jobs and $2.3 billion to the Manitoba GDP and so organizations like Manitoba Pork are committed to helping grow the workforce in Manitoba. This often means looking outside of our own country to fill the gap and working with post secondary institutions, like the Russ Edwards School of Agriculture and Environment at Assiniboine College in Brandon to develop training programs to fill specific needs. Jian Li Wu came to Canada from China in 2019 to study at Assiniboine College. He graduated from their food processing program and later took a job instructing in the same program. He is loved by his students, many of whom are international students themselves, because he understands their lived experience and can help them adjust, not only to college life, but to life in Canada.
