It is true that many farms today are bigger than they were 50 years ago. Advancements in science and technology have allowed farmers to expand and specialize, providing a high standard of care, producing food in a sustainable manner and taking advantage of efficiencies. Canadian hog farms are a great example of this. Modern hog farmers strive to provide consumers with safe, high quality pork by adhering to a set of standards set out by the Canadian Pork Excellence program. This program sets national guidelines for food safety, animal care and traceability. Barn design and the use of state of the art technology help farmers achieve those goals. Barn designers, like Kevin Kurbis of New Standard Ag/AgriHub, work with farmers and their veterinarians to ensure that that animal wellbeing is the top priority in any barn build or retrofit.
